Hello from the high seas! I am currently sailing with Regent Seven Seas on a European journey from Italy to Greece and Turkey. My heart is, as always, in Italy and I am excited to share some tips and tricks from some of the magnificent Italian spots this issue as our contributors take us to Naples, Umbria and a seaside town famous in antiquity but unbeknownst to most modern travelers: Sperlonga.
Contributing writer Kevin Raub visits the chaotic southern metropolis of Napoli. He’s taken under the wing of some expert locals discovering some surprises about Naples such as a lasagna recipe unlike anything he’s had before and how Neapolitans take advantage of the warm sea breeze that reaches the city most months of the year. The city can feel overwhelming as the traffic is world famous and residents are animated and boisterous but Kevin gets to the heart of Naples and shares his tips.
My friend and fellow wire fox terrier lover Fay Henson takes us around her beloved Lake Trasimeno. The lake washes the shores of Umbria and holds three islands within its borders. Umbria experiences all four seasons and the colors change as the seasons come and go. Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” plays in one’s mind as lush spring is starting to give way to warm summer days and color schemes.
Elaine Murphy unveils Sperlonga, a small town between Rome and Naples which was famous in antiquity for its emperor’s beachside palaces and dinner parties and its storytelling sculptures. Thanks to modern technologies, it’s easier than ever to envision yourself in that ancient world and marvel at the beauty of this little-known stop.
