If you plan to drive or rent a car in Italy, you must have an International Driver’s Permit (IDP).

Here’s what to know NOW about travel to Italy:

1. Explore the Incredible Caravaggio Exhibit in Rome

A spectacular Caravaggio Exhibit has just opened at Palazzo Barberini in Rome, running until July 6, 2025. It features 24 works by Caravaggio and the rare chance to see a 25th piece in its original location. Tickets are available in advance here

2. Walk Through Florence’s Newly Reopened Vasari Corridor

I’ve always wanted to visit the legendary Vasari Corridor, the hidden, elevated passageway over the Ponte Vecchio once used by the Medici. After eight years of renovations, it has finally reopened to the public! I’m hoping to visit this spring—get your tickets here

3. Discover Florence’s Hottest New Hotels

Florence is seeing several exciting new hotel openings, catering to a variety of budgets!

  • The Social Hub Florence – A modern, vibrant, 4-star stay in the historic heart of Florence, just a 13-minute walk from the train station. Great for those who want to mix comfort with a social vibe.
  • The Hoxton, Florence – This stylish Roman favorite now has a sister hotel celebrating both Renaissance and Postmodern interiors in the Centro Storico neighborhood near the Piazza della Libertà and other iconic landmarks.
  • Collegio alla Querce, Auberge Resorts Collection – A newly opened luxury gem located on a picturesque hillside north of Florence’s historic center, with beautifully restored Baroque gardens, offers stunning views of the Duomo and Chianti winelands.

4. Prepare for the UK’s New Travel Rule: ETA Requirement

If you’re flying through London to Italy (or visiting the UK), be aware that American travelers—and many others—now need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization). The best way to apply is through their app, and you should receive a decision within three days. You can fly to the UK while waiting for approval, but I strongly recommend applying as soon as possible. I want to make sure you know about this, as there hasn’t been much press coverage lately.

5. Don’t Get Stuck—You Need an International Driver’s Permit!

A friendly reminder: If you plan to drive or rent a car in Italy, you must have an International Driver’s Permit (IDP). I’ve heard horror stories of travelers being denied rental cars or facing hefty fines from police. You can get an IDP through AAA and it’s valid for one year. As you know, I always rent from Auto Europe—you can save 5% If you mention my IATA #72002261 when you call to rent.

6. Stay Updated on the Pope’s Health

If you’ve been following the news, you know that Pope Francis has been hospitalized in recent weeks, sometimes in critical condition. Things seem to have improved this past week. A few of you have asked whether a visit to Rome or the Vatican would be affected if he passes—expect 3-4 weeks (or more) of mourning, the funeral and the conclave to elect a new pope. This article provides a great overview of what happens when a pope dies.

Italy isn’t just a place—it’s a feeling, a dream, a calling. Whether you’re planning your next trip, envisioning a move or simply craving a deeper connection to la dolce vita, Dream of Italy brings Italy to you—wherever you are.
