As Rome gears up for the Vatican’s Jubilee in 2025, visitors from around the world are eagerly planning their pilgrimages to the Eternal City but that doesn’t come without headaches for all who plan to visit Rome in 2025. Celebrated every 25 years, the Giubileo or Jubilee, also known as the Holy Year, is a time of universal pardon and renewal in the Catholic Church. The tradition that dates back to the year 1300, instituted by Pope Boniface VIII. The 2025 Jubilee will be particularly significant as it marks the first ordinary Jubilee of the 21st century. Pope Francis has approved the motto “Pilgrims of Hope” as the theme.
The Jubilee year is set to begin on December 24, 2024 (Christmas Eve) and will conclude on January 6, 2026 (the Epiphany). If you are planning to travel to Rome AT ALL next year, you need to start your planning and booking your trip now. It is not going to be an ordinary year.
We will keep you updated on specific events and trends as 2025 draws closer but for now, here is what to expect:
1. BIG Crowds
Rome is always a popular tourist destination, but during the Jubilee year, visitor numbers are expected to skyrocket. Some estimates suggest that up to 35 million pilgrims and tourists may visit during this period. Be prepared for longer lines at major attractions, restaurant reservations harder to come by and tours filling up. Book now.
2. Enhanced Security Measures
With the increased number of visitors, Rome is likely to implement additional security measures. Expect more thorough checks at major sites and potentially restricted access to some areas. Of course, the Vatican will beef up security too.
3. Special Events at the Vatican
Throughout the year, there will be numerous special masses, processions, and other religious ceremonies. The opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica is a particularly significant event that marks the beginning of the Jubilee.
4. Special Cultural Exhibitions and Performances
In addition to religious events, Rome is likely to host a variety of cultural exhibitions, concerts, and performances to celebrate the Jubilee year.
5. Construction and Infrastructure Improvements
I saw this first hand when I was in Rone in July. The city is investing in infrastructure upgrades to prepare for the influx of visitors. The streets were a mess with projects and it took longer to get anywhere by taxi or bus than at other times.
