The Ligurian Sea and the Apuan Alps are the backdrop for this coastal resort town in northern Tuscany, current home of Andrea Bocelli and his wife, Veronica Berti. Meaning “fort of marble,” Forte dei Marmi received recognition for its pure-white Carrara marble mined from the Apuan Alps, which Michelangelo used for his Pietà sculpture. The town’s namesake fort was used as a defense against pirate raids as well as storage for marble that was to be shipped out of the town.
