From The TV Show: Procession of the Madonna in Castelvetere sul Calore

In the Castelvetere sul Calore episode of the second season of Dream of Italy on PBS, Kathy learns how to bake a special pastry baked in honor of the Madonna.

A statue of the patron saint of Castelvetere sul Calore, Madonna delle Grazie, is taken out of her sanctuary and carried throughout the town on two days per year: April 28 and July 2. April 28 celebrates the Miracle of the Snow when the Madonna appeared to an old woman asking for a church to be built in her honor. The woman told the local priest who thought she was crazy until it snowed on April 28 in the exact place where she wanted the church built (which it eventually was). Tortani, special round biscuits, are baked in honor of the Madonna for the April celebration. July 2 is the Feast Day for Madonna delle Grazie throughout the world and celebrated in Castelvetere with a procession.
