From The TV Show: Gran Sasso National Park in Abruzzo

In the Abruzzo episode of the second season of Dream of Italy on PBS, Kathy enjoys nature in the greenest region in Europe.

Abruzzo is known as the greenest region in Europe, partly for its Gran Sasso National Park. Among the largest protected and most biodiverse places in Europe, the park contains the rocky Gran Sasso massif, the highest mountain in the Appennines, and Europe’s southernmost glacier. The mountains, lakes, and woods attract outdoor enthusiasts year-round, who come to hike, ski, ride horses, canoe, bird watch, and mountain bike – including Pope John Paul II, who enjoyed skiing there. However, the park is still uncrowded, with most tourists heading to the mountains in northern Italy and Italians vacationing seaside. For more information, visit: gransassolagapark.it
