From The TV Show: Orchestra Popolare Del Saltarello in Abruzzo

In the Abruzzo episode of the second season of Dream of Italy on PBS, Kathy learns about the region’s musical traditions and Saltarello dance.

Orchestra Popolare Del Saltarello, created by Danilo Di Paolonicola, is dedicated to preserving the traditional song and dance of Abruzzo, and mixes traditional and modern musical elements. Instruments such as accordions, flutes, tambourines and guitars accompany the lively singing and saltarello dancing. The folk group was born out of a desire to explore Abruzzo’s musical traditions – particularly, the music developed along the tratturi (ancient shepherding paths) that also formed the saltarello. The 16-person band performs in concerts and in public spaces throughout Abruzzo. For more information, visit their Facebook Page.
