In the Rome episode of the first season of Dream of Italy on PBS, Kathy wanders through one of working-class markets of Testaccio.
The Mercato Testaccio offers everything from vegetables to cured meats, fresh seafood to Sicilian pastries. The market, at Via Galvani and Via Beniamino Franklin, is a great excuse to visit the working-class neighborhood of Testaccio. (Nearby sights include the MACRO Museum, the Protestant Cemetery and the Pyramid.) The market is open Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. A great way to learn more about the market (and taste many of the offerings) is to join The Taste of Testaccio Food Tour run by Eating Italy Food Tours.
