In the Puglia episode of the first season of Dream of Italy on PBS, Kathy joins in the most popular evening stroll in all of Italy.
Every Saturday and Sunday, throughout the year, the Leccese flock to the historic center and engage in a grand passeggiata. The passeggiata is the nightly stroll most Italians take, usually before and sometimes after dinner. But here in Lecce, it is an obsession, with the entire city, and even people from the neighboring countryside, coming out. For at least an hour and a half, crowds walk from Piazza Mazzini to Piazza Sant’ Oronzo and back, on the main streets and side alleys, stopping to enjoy a coffee or gelato or to shop.
