SUMMARY:Venice: Festa del Redentore
DESCRIPTION:The Redentore Feast (Feast of the Redeemer) is a deeply felt celebration in Venice as it combines religion with entertainment\, thanks to the Saturday night phantasmagorical fireworks’ display attracting thousands of visitors: a kaleidoscope of shades\, from a game of light and colors on the inimitable setting in St. Mark’s Basin\, lights up the spires\, domes and bell towers of the city. At dusk\, plenty of boats traditionally decked out with flower festoons\, colourful balloons and brightly Chinese lamps begin to flock into both St. Mark’s Basin and the Giudecca Canal. Waiting for the firework display\, which starts at 11:30 p.m. and lasts late into the night\, people enjoy a sumptuous dinner of traditional Venetian specialties. The spectacular festival is held every third weekend of July and is second only to Venice’s Carnevale. \nThis tradition dates back to 1577\, right at the end of a terrible plague. The Redentore Feast was first held to celebrate the construction of the Palladio’s Redentore Church\, built on the Giudecca Island to give thanks for being freed from the Black Plague. Celebrations include the Holy Mass presided by the Bishop and the religious procession to the Palladian basilica\, which can be done via an impressive 330-meter pontoon bridge. SUMMARY:Spelonga (Marche): A Beautiful Party
DESCRIPTION:Every three years the wonderful town of Spelonga in the le Marche region hosts a town wide celebration known as la Festa Bella (the Beautiful Party) for the entire month of August. The silhouette of a ship is recreated in the town piazza where a Turkish flag waves high up on the ship’s mast in memory of the Turkish defeat in 1571. The celebration starts with a long series of bell tolls calling all the men to the town center. Once complete\, 100s of lumberjacks are gathered and prepare for a three-day journey into the woods in search for a tree trunk to make the mast out of. DESCRIPTION:According to legend\, in 352 AD\, a rich and bored Roman gentleman experienced a vivid dream in which the Virgin Mary told him that a certain hill in Rome would be covered in snow in the morning\, and that he should then use his money to build a church on that site. \nBeing that Rome was deep in a steamy summer in the beginning of August\, the gentleman didn’t think much of this prophecy\, but decided to test it out nonetheless. Pope Liberius was also having a very similar dream. The gentleman and the Pope bumped into one another\, then ran together towards the hill\, where they both observed snow falling… \nToday this is the home of the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. SUMMARY:Cappelle sul Tavo (Abruzzo): Palio of the Dancing Dolls
DESCRIPTION:To kick off ferragosto this friendly battle\, also called the Palio delle Pupe\, amongst 14 neighboring towns in Abruzzo puts on a show for spectators. Pupe are papier-mache lifesized dolls and are covered in fireworks. For over 40 years these dolls have a dance “battle” where representatives from the towns climb up inside the doll and perform a dance to folk music that was originally done in hopes of a fertile harvest.  What’s most impressive though\, is that the fireworks are going off as they perform!
