SUMMARY:Pierantonio (Umbria): Palio dei Rioni
DESCRIPTION:You may have heard of the Palio in Siena where neighborhoods compete in horse races\, but in the small town of Pierantonio located about 25 minutes from Perugia\, the capital of Umbria\, the Palio dei Rioni has competitions in wheelbarrow races. In the piazza\, stacks of hay shape a race course where wheelbarrow races are held. Each neighborhood in Pierantonio is represented by two people of the specific neighborhood\, one of whom will sit in the wheelbarrow while the other pushes. There are a variety of races in which these neighborhoods compete. One\, for example\, is a time trial while another includes the rider of the wheelbarrow to hold out a long stick and with which they try to catch multiple rings held over the race course. There are three nights of the festa; the first is a live concert\, the second is the races themselves\, and the third and final night is a closing party with a DJ. Each night there is a “stand gastronomico” which serves an assortment of grilled meats and the local dish “torta al testo”. This event brings the whole community together and is a way for visitors to see an authentic Italian event. \nDream of Italy is a membership website and award-winning travel publication publishing 170 issues since 2002. SUMMARY:Viterbo (Lazio): Ludika 1243 a medieval affair
DESCRIPTION:Ludika 1243 derives its name from the Italian adjective ludico which sounds similar to our English “ludicrous” but\, unlike our version of the word\, the theme here is a mere playful and carefree spirit.  A perfect adjective to describe this historical reenactment that takes place in San Pellegrino\, the oldest city in Viterbo\, in the month of July from the 11th – 14th & the 18th – 21st. This 13th Century adventure in the region of Lazio offers people of all ages to come out and join noblemen\, ladies\, princes\, beggars\, inquisitors and artisans\, participate in outdoor games in the piazza dei giochi (games square)\, watch brave fire-eaters\, take arms up in duels\, learn how to entertain in the classic jester manner\, and even witness the battle between the Guelph and Ghibelline armies. \nDream of Italy is a membership website and award-winning travel publication publishing 170 issues since 2002. SUMMARY:Lavagna (Liguria): The Fieschi Wedding Cake and couples' game
DESCRIPTION:Lavagna in the coastal town of Genoa\, is home to a major annual bachelor party in medieval style celebrating Count Opizzo Fieschi’s last night as a single man. The event commemorates the history of the Fieschi family from Levante who reached the peak of their dynasty in the 13th Century. The festivities start on the evening of the 13th with a banquet and dance in Cogorno\, the neighboring town\, after the Count arrives on the scene riding horseback to piazza della Basilica dei Fieschi. The following day\, the wedding to Siena-born Bianca dei Bianchi calls for a massive town-wide celebration which centers around the gargantuan 2\,850 lbs wedding cake also called the torta dei Fieschi. \nWhat makes this celebration of love so special is that it invites guests to also find their soulmate with the gioco delle coppie\, or the couples’ game. To participate all you have to do is purchase a ticket\, women receive a pink ticket and men receive a blue ticket. For every pair of pink and blue there is one word written on it and after Bianca\, the beautiful bride\, cuts the wedding cake\, you can head to the piazza to find your match. Once found\, you can go pick up a slice of the wedding cake together and get to know each other. The evening also includes a Court parade with children\, dames\, courtesans\, prominent historical intellectuals\, musicians\, villagers\, fire-eaters and many more! \nDream of Italy is a membership website and award-winning travel publication publishing 170 issues since 2002. SUMMARY:Cappelle sul Tavo (Abruzzo): Palio of the Dancing Dolls
DESCRIPTION:To kick off ferragosto this friendly battle\, also called the Palio delle Pupe\, amongst 14 neighboring towns in Abruzzo puts on a show for spectators. Pupe are papier-mache lifesized dolls and are covered in fireworks. For over 40 years these dolls have a dance “battle” where representatives from the towns climb up inside the doll and perform a dance to folk music that was originally done in hopes of a fertile harvest.  What’s most impressive though\, is that the fireworks are going off as they perform! At the end of the dance\, the best doll and performance wins. \nDream of Italy is a membership website and award-winning travel publication publishing 170 issues since 2002. SUMMARY:Vetulonia (Grossetto): Palla 21 Tournament
DESCRIPTION:If you find yourself needing a break from all that sun and fresh air on the Follonica beaches\, then head over to the hillsides of Grossetto near Castiglione della Pescaia to a small town called Vetulonia where you will come across a friendly tournament of palla 21. This is a traditional game\, also called palla eh! because of the sound that players make before serving the ball.  This tournament takes place in August and consists of a small hand-sized palla (a ball) with similar rules to tennis except with a different playing field. The streets are marked with chalk to indicate the limits and the locals are very enthusiastic about the game. Players consider all of their surroundings as part of it (buildings\, objects\, even people on the sidelines). \nDream of Italy is a membership website and award-winning travel publication publishing 170 issues since 2002. And a word to the wise — try to grab a spot on the ferry point on Burano: the race is best seen from this spot.
