DESCRIPTION:You may have heard of the Palio in Siena where neighborhoods compete in horse races\, but in the small town of Pierantonio located about 25 minutes from Perugia\, the capital of Umbria\, the Palio dei Rioni has competitions in wheelbarrow races. In the piazza\, stacks of hay shape a race course where wheelbarrow races are held. Each neighborhood in Pierantonio is represented by two people of the specific neighborhood\, one of whom will sit in the wheelbarrow while the other pushes. There are a variety of races in which these neighborhoods compete. One\, for example\, is a time trial while another includes the rider of the wheelbarrow to hold out a long stick and with which they try to catch multiple rings held over the race course. There are three nights of the festa; the first is a live concert\, the second is the races themselves\, and the third and final night is a closing party with a DJ. Each night there is a “stand gastronomico” which serves an assortment of grilled meats and the local dish “torta al testo”. SUMMARY:Lavagna (Liguria): The Fieschi Wedding Cake and couples' game
DESCRIPTION:Lavagna in the coastal town of Genoa\, is home to a major annual bachelor party in medieval style celebrating Count Opizzo Fieschi’s last night as a single man. The event commemorates the history of the Fieschi family from Levante who reached the peak of their dynasty in the 13th Century. The festivities start on the evening of the 13th with a banquet and dance in Cogorno\, the neighboring town\, after the Count arrives on the scene riding horseback to piazza della Basilica dei Fieschi. The following day\, the wedding to Siena-born Bianca dei Bianchi calls for a massive town-wide celebration which centers around the gargantuan 2\,850 lbs wedding cake also called the torta dei Fieschi. \nWhat makes this celebration of love so special is that it invites guests to also find their soulmate with the gioco delle coppie\, or the couples’ game. To participate all you have to do is purchase a ticket\, women receive a pink ticket and men receive a blue ticket. DESCRIPTION:Every last Sunday of August this Tuscan hilltop town is consumed in the\, by then\, week-long celebration of the Bravio delle Botti\, also known as the “Barrel Race”. The festivities kick off with the presentation of the Bravium\, the victory banner\, which is painted each year by a select artist with a winning design based on on a specific theme; the Bravium is then presented to the town the Sunday before the race. You can choose to see just the race but the town invites all to come and support the spingitori (the pushers) the entire week before in their evening training sessions. Representatives from the eight districts (2 per district) train at night for the uphill race (over half a mile) where partners  work together to push a 176 pound barrel through the historic streets of Montepulciano to the finish line in Piazza Grande. \nThe Thursday before the race guests can witness the Procession of the Candles where flag-wavers\, drummers and the candle bearers parade through the town in the evening and meet up in Piazza Grande to watch a performance and enjoy a firework show. DESCRIPTION:Since 1275\, this ancient horse race has turned Asti‘s Piazza Alfieri into a racetrack\, and has linked modern Asti with its medieval roots. Twenty-one Contrade (city divisions) compete in the central square\, while over 1\,200 individuals donning medieval garb parade proudly throughout the streets of the city. The traditional flag-wavers (Sbandieratori) also run their own Palio against residents of neighboring towns. To the winner (both horse and human alike) goes the spoils — a crimson velvet drape — which will remain in their city division’s possession for the year.
