SUMMARY:Manarola (Liguria): World's Largest Nativity Scene
DESCRIPTION:You’ve heard about the world’s largest Christmas tree lighting in Umbria and now there is the world’s largest presepe in the town of Manarola\, one of the five towns in the Cinque Terre. The project was realized by Mario Andreoli\, a retired railway worker who has dedicated over 30 years to the installation and in 2007 it was added to the Guinness World Records. Not only is the view of this nativity scene breathtaking but it is also environmentally friendly thanks to the photovoltaic factory that was built to supply electricity to it. SUMMARY:Gubbio (Umbria): Corso dei Ceri (Running of the Candles)
DESCRIPTION:One of Italy’s oldest and weirdest traditions\, Corso dei Ceri\, or “Running of the Candles\,” takes place once a year on May 15th in the picturesque Umbrian town of Gubbio. Three “candles” (actually 30 foot-high wooden pillars) crowned with statues of saints are paraded around the town by “ceraiuoli” and then run up the streets of Gubbio to the Basilica of Saint Ubaldo which overlooks the town. SUMMARY:Venice: Festa del Redentore
DESCRIPTION:The Redentore Feast (Feast of the Redeemer) is a deeply felt celebration in Venice as it combines religion with entertainment\, thanks to the Saturday night phantasmagorical fireworks’ display attracting thousands of visitors: a kaleidoscope of shades\, from a game of light and colors on the inimitable setting in St. Mark’s Basin\, lights up the spires\, domes and bell towers of the city. At dusk\, plenty of boats traditionally decked out with flower festoons\, colourful balloons and brightly Chinese lamps begin to flock into both St. Mark’s Basin and the Giudecca Canal. Waiting for the firework display\, which starts at 11:30 p.m. and lasts late into the night\, people enjoy a sumptuous dinner of traditional Venetian specialties. The spectacular festival is held every third weekend of July and is second only to Venice’s Carnevale. \nThis tradition dates back to 1577\, right at the end of a terrible plague. The Redentore Feast was first held to celebrate the construction of the Palladio’s Redentore Church\, built on the Giudecca Island to give thanks for being freed from the Black Plague. Celebrations include the Holy Mass presided by the Bishop and the religious procession to the Palladian basilica\, which can be done via an impressive 330-meter pontoon bridge. The weekend finishes with the Regata su gondole\, a gondola race organised as part of the Voga alla Veneta rowing season. \nDream of Italy is a membership website and award-winning travel publication publishing 170 issues since 2002. SUMMARY:Rome: Miracle of the Madonna of the Snow
DESCRIPTION:According to legend\, in 352 AD\, a rich and bored Roman gentleman experienced a vivid dream in which the Virgin Mary told him that a certain hill in Rome would be covered in snow in the morning\, and that he should then use his money to build a church on that site. \nBeing that Rome was deep in a steamy summer in the beginning of August\, the gentleman didn’t think much of this prophecy\, but decided to test it out nonetheless. Pope Liberius was also having a very similar dream. The gentleman and the Pope bumped into one another\, then ran together towards the hill\, where they both observed snow falling… \nToday this is the home of the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. The miracle is re-enacted every August. \nDream of Italy is a membership website and award-winning travel publication publishing 170 issues since 2002. Get a free issue to see what we are all about. SUMMARY:Rome: Feast of San Lorenzo
DESCRIPTION:The martyrdom of San Lorenzo is celebrated in Rome with fireworks and celebrations throughout the area around his crypt on the Via Tiburtina\, where he was killed in 258 AD. The patron saint of librarians\, firemen\, bakers\, and other professions whose jobs involve fire and roasting\, San Lorenzo’s association with such incendiary professions is certainly a disturbing one — His martyrdom is said to have occurred by slowly being roasted on a gridiron by the troops of the Emperor\, and\, as he died\, is believed to have said in Latin\, “Ecce\, miser\, assasti tibi partem unam\, regire aliam et manduca” (“Here\, you miserable person: you have roasted one side for yourself\, now turn me over and eat”). \nDream of Italy is a membership website and award-winning travel publication publishing 170 issues since 2002. SUMMARY:Cappelle sul Tavo (Abruzzo): Palio of the Dancing Dolls
DESCRIPTION:To kick off ferragosto this friendly battle\, also called the Palio delle Pupe\, amongst 14 neighboring towns in Abruzzo puts on a show for spectators. Pupe are papier-mache lifesized dolls and are covered in fireworks. For over 40 years these dolls have a dance “battle” where representatives from the towns climb up inside the doll and perform a dance to folk music that was originally done in hopes of a fertile harvest.  What’s most impressive though\, is that the fireworks are going off as they perform! At the end of the dance\, the best doll and performance wins. \nDream of Italy is a membership website and award-winning travel publication publishing 170 issues since 2002. SUMMARY:Ferragosto
DESCRIPTION:It’s the summer and in August many Italians are looking forward to Ferragosto which starts on August 15th. It’s known as a two-week vacation period with roots in ancient Rome. When Emperor Augustus invented the feriae Augusti to mark the end harvest he also made it a moment that signified a period of well-deserved rest. Later\, during the fascist regime\, this time of the year was used to promote travel within the country\, including discounts on train voyages to see all the beauty that Italy has to offer. Today it is still a largely celebrated holiday. \nIn Rome\, on the evening of August 15th (the Feast of the Assumption)\, the piazze are filled with the performances of professional dancers for the Gran Ballo di Ferragosto. Squares throughout the city are enlivened by performances of all walks of life\, from tango to rock\, hip-hop\, ballroom dancing\, and more\, with a giant concert in the Parco Archeologico of Teatro Marcello\, as well! \nDream of Italy is a membership website and award-winning travel publication publishing 170 issues since 2002. SUMMARY:Ferrara: Buskers Festival
DESCRIPTION:This August\, if you find yourself in Emilia-Romagna take a train and walk through the historic streets of Ferrara and meet international street musicians as they perform various genres of music from around the world. The festival was originated by Stefano Bottoni\, a native ferrarese\, who was inspired by his visit to New York in the 1980s to see his own city become more welcoming to street musicians. After proposing the idea to the mayor\, the festival soon became an international hit known even to the talented bolognese Lucio Dalla who would go on to perform in the festival in 1989 with Jimmy Villotti where they blended in with the crowd. Since the 1990s the festival has had a guest country for each year (a majority of the street musicians would come from this country). Not only is this a culturally rich event for all\, but it is also part of Eco-friendly festivals with initiatives that promote free water distributions from the town’s aqueduct\, the “Last Minute Market a Ferrara” where unsold items from the festival are gathered\, shuttle and shared ride services. \nDream of Italy is a membership website and award-winning travel publication publishing 170 issues since 2002. SUMMARY:Nuoro (Sardinia): The Feast of the Redeemer
DESCRIPTION:Since August 29th\, 1901\, when Pope Leo XIII erected a bronze\, 23 ft. tall statue of Christ the Redeemer on Monte Ortobene in honor of the Jubilee Year\, locals and visitors have participated in celebratory procession to the statue from Nuoro‘s Cathedral. At Dawn\, the faithful participants of the march congregate in the square outside the cathedral. They sing songs as they follow a cart decorated with ears of wheat and oleanders all the way to the statue. Once the parade reaches the statue\, a mass is sung. After mass the procession quietly returns to the town before another colorful parade with masks and traditional costumes takes place. The parade ends with a folklore festival inside the amphitheater. \nDream of Italy is a membership website and award-winning travel publication publishing 170 issues since 2002. SUMMARY:Montepulciano: Barrel Race
DESCRIPTION:Every last Sunday of August this Tuscan hilltop town is consumed in the\, by then\, week-long celebration of the Bravio delle Botti\, also known as the “Barrel Race”. The festivities kick off with the presentation of the Bravium\, the victory banner\, which is painted each year by a select artist with a winning design based on on a specific theme; the Bravium is then presented to the town the Sunday before the race. You can choose to see just the race but the town invites all to come and support the spingitori (the pushers) the entire week before in their evening training sessions. Representatives from the eight districts (2 per district) train at night for the uphill race (over half a mile) where partners  work together to push a 176 pound barrel through the historic streets of Montepulciano to the finish line in Piazza Grande. \nThe Thursday before the race guests can witness the Procession of the Candles where flag-wavers\, drummers and the candle bearers parade through the town in the evening and meet up in Piazza Grande to watch a performance and enjoy a firework show. The following day the race begins at 7pm where the strongest spingitori race for the Bravium. \nDream of Italy is a membership website and award-winning travel publication publishing 170 issues since 2002. SUMMARY:Viterbo: Festa di Santa Rosa
DESCRIPTION:If you happen to be in Rome on the third day of September\, catch the train to Viterbo for the Festa di Santa Rosa\, the festival of the city’s patron saint. Thousands flock to see one hundred facchini\, or strongmen\, carry a 90-foot tall\, four-ton macchina – an obelisk-shaped statue – of the Santa Rosa through the winding streets of the city. The tradition began hundreds of years ago\, with the statue becoming progressively larger and heavier until the 19th century\, when the macchina toppled over\, crushing facchini and spectators alike. Not to worry\, however: a disaster has not happened since\, although it is still said that the facchini must sign their wills before they can bear the weight of the macchina. The macchina is truly an incredible sight – a gigantic tower\, swathed in light\, seems to float over the apartment buildings as it glows against the night sky. Onlookers line up for the priming viewing spots in the early morning\, sending friends to bring back sustenance from the piazzas\, where dozens of stands are set up in a carnival-like atmosphere. The Festa di Santa Rosa is almost an other-worldly experience\, so don’t miss it. \nDream of Italy is a membership website and award-winning travel publication publishing 170 issues since 2002. SUMMARY:Florence: Rificolona (Lantern Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Though the origin of this colorful celebration is disputed\, many believe Rificolona began as a celebration on the eve of the Feast of the Madonna\, the nativity of the virgin. It is said that villagers would start their pilgrimage before the break of dawn to the city of Florence on the eve of her birthday. They relied on their lanterns\, or rificolone\, to light their. Others affirm the holiday’s roots are found deep within pagan tradition. In any case\, Rificolona continues to be celebrated in Florence and other parts of Tuscany. Every year\, people can visit the market in piazza Santissima Annunziata in the days leading up to the event. On the evening of the 7th\, children and adults parade through the city while singing songs and brandishing colorful rificolone on sticks. \nDream of Italy is a membership website and award-winning travel publication publishing 170 issues since 2002.
