SUMMARY:Ferragosto
DESCRIPTION:It’s the summer and in August many Italians are looking forward to Ferragosto which starts on August 15th. It’s known as a two-week vacation period with roots in ancient Rome. When Emperor Augustus invented the feriae Augusti to mark the end harvest he also made it a moment that signified a period of well-deserved rest. Later\, during the fascist regime\, this time of the year was used to promote travel within the country\, including discounts on train voyages to see all the beauty that Italy has to offer. Today it is still a largely celebrated holiday. \nIn Rome\, on the evening of August 15th (the Feast of the Assumption)\, the piazze are filled with the performances of professional dancers for the Gran Ballo di Ferragosto. Squares throughout the city are enlivened by performances of all walks of life\, from tango to rock\, hip-hop\, ballroom dancing\, and more\, with a giant concert in the Parco Archeologico of Teatro Marcello\, as well! \nDream of Italy is a membership website and award-winning travel publication publishing 170 issues since 2002. SUMMARY:Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics
DESCRIPTION:The Regatta (Palio) of the Ancient Maritime Republics is a competition on eight-oared galleons among the crews of the cities of Amalfi\, Genoa\, Pisa and Venice. The event is held in a different city each year\, combining a fascinating historical and cultural message with a spectacular competition. These four cities have competed in the 2\,000-meter race since 1956. Each of the four boats competing represents one of these “maritime republics\,” with the sculpted figure head at the prow of the boat proudly declaring the boat’s alliance — the winged horse (for Amalfi)\, the winged dragon (Genoa)\, the eagle (Pisa) and the lion (Venice). Parades and revelers donning medieval garb top off the festivities! The regatta is always preceded by the solemn historical parade\, famous for the precious costumes\, that introduces the atmosphere of the competition. \nThe four cities are present with actors that wear colorful and precious costumes reproduced by ancient models\, flags\, trumpets and drums. Every group has the assignment to remember and to re-enact episodes and characters of the maritime history of its own city\, and therefore of the whole country and its role in the Mediterranean sea. A sea that unites the contenders and has a double meaning: once scenery of sour battles\, but also net of communications and exchanges built by navigators\, merchants\, artists and scientists of the four Maritime Republics\, it represents the most extraordinary example of interaction between different people and nations. \nNote: Dates have not been confirmed; please visit the event website for updates. \nAccess 160 Issues of Our Award-Winning Travel Publication. SUMMARY:Lavagna (Liguria): The Fieschi Wedding Cake and couples' game
DESCRIPTION:Lavagna in the coastal town of Genoa\, is home to a major annual bachelor party in medieval style celebrating Count Opizzo Fieschi’s last night as a single man. The event commemorates the history of the Fieschi family from Levante who reached the peak of their dynasty in the 13th Century. The festivities start on the evening of the 13th with a banquet and dance in Cogorno\, the neighboring town\, after the Count arrives on the scene riding horseback to piazza della Basilica dei Fieschi. The following day\, the wedding to Siena-born Bianca dei Bianchi calls for a massive town-wide celebration which centers around the gargantuan 2\,850 lbs wedding cake also called the torta dei Fieschi. \nWhat makes this celebration of love so special is that it invites guests to also find their soulmate with the gioco delle coppie\, or the couples’ game. To participate all you have to do is purchase a ticket\, women receive a pink ticket and men receive a blue ticket. For every pair of pink and blue there is one word written on it and after Bianca\, the beautiful bride\, cuts the wedding cake\, you can head to the piazza to find your match. Once found\, you can go pick up a slice of the wedding cake together and get to know each other. The evening also includes a Court parade with children\, dames\, courtesans\, prominent historical intellectuals\, musicians\, villagers\, fire-eaters and many more! \nDream of Italy is a membership website and award-winning travel publication publishing 170 issues since 2002.
